Social Media, you’ve made us all addicted!

We’re now scrolling junkies. Why would we all waste our time scrolling through such utter nonsense, abuse, anger, ‘look at me’ posts, sharenting (parents sharing their kids), promotional jargon, show-off knowledge, repeated news stories, so-called opinions, thought leadership, questions as clickbait, engagement requests, follow requests, regular ads, so many examples, I could go on but I guess you get the idea.

We think we’re being interesting and we’re not, we think people get value and they don’t because we have no room to absorb anything in depth, we’re social butterflies, with a goldfish’s memory.

I used to be a massive supporter of social media when it first came out. I loved it, they called it Web 2.0, remember? I was telling everyone about it and people didn’t understand it. I saw the huge potential of it but I never expected it to become what it is today.

I joined LinkedIn on 25 October 2004.

I joined Facebook on 25 July 2007.

I joined Twitter in April 2009.

And today when I scroll through the utter nonsense being posted, I feel that we’re all wasting our time and only for the benefit of these huge companies who are raking in millions in revenue and profits because we’re all posting ridiculous stuff that virtually nobody wants to read.

Too harsh?

Think about it, 99% of the time we’re only interested in our own posts and our deep deep desire for people to engage with it.

I can only believe that if I’m feeling this way then potentially many more thousands or maybe millions are feeling this way too? Are you? If you are feel free to comment, but I suspect you’ve probably not even managed to read this far have you?

If I was an early adopter I’m probably an early disruptor now, I wish it all went away overnight.

I enjoy writing for my own blog, as well as producing podcast interviews, which are for my own satisfaction really and maybe it’s even a bit of meditation too. I have decided I will share my posts in my feeds and that’s all I will do there. I will stop scrolling, which I have actually anyway on Facebook.

If you’ve enjoyed this post and would like to support my writing feel free to buy me a coffee. 👇
